The diversity of our regional expertise allows us to offer insights and strategies on a range of energy market dynamics and regulatory environments, while tailoring solutions for a local context.

Australia

Based in Sydney, IES Advisory has been a leading consulting firm in the Australian energy sector for over 42 years. The firm is a long-standing adviser to stakeholders in the Australian energy market. These include the Australian Energy Market Operator, the Australian Energy Market Commission, GENCOs and Network companies. IES provides expertise and services in planning, market modelling, simulations, rulemaking, reliability analysis, auditing and certification of market systems, and undertakes assignments as independent expert. IES also specialises in reliability modelling for high levels of variable renewable energy, battery storage market participation, and National Electricity Market modelling, simulations and forecasting for market participants. In addition, IES provides advice on energy markets to various state government departments.

South-East Asia

The IES Advisory team has developed a robust portfolio of work at the South-East Asian regional level, as within each individual ASEAN country, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and the Philippines. This experience spans across energy transition development roadmaps for net zero pathways, renewable energy development and potential assessments, regional integration studies, market modelling, as well as policy / regulatory analysis, amongst many others. Our team has a strong understanding of both the local and regional contexts of the energy systems in ASEAN countries and longstanding partnerships with developmental organizations, utilities and planning departments, and investors operating in the sector. We have delivered capacity building and training to utilities and stakeholders across the region.

Middle-East North Africa

IES Advisory has recently expanded operations in the renewable energy sector of the MENA region. We have carried out a range of decarbonization and market development projects across Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, amongst numerous others, which are reflective of trends towards renewable energy deployment supported by cross-border trade integration.

Central & East Asia

IES Advisory has been working in Central and East Asian markets for over 15 years advising and providing technical support in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and more recently in Turkmenistan. Our experience here includes gas, electricity, and heat sectors and have conducted studies on supporting the deployment of advanced smart grid and renewable energy infrastructure.

South-Asia Region

Our team has delivered several projects in the South Asia region that involve regional electricity market planning across India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, open access and tariff reform analysis in Sri Lanka, and technical advisory support in Pakistan.

Pacific Islands

As an Australian-based firm, we also have a strong presence in the Pacific Island region, providing advise to utilities and regulators on grid investments and supporting energy transition efforts in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, and the Solomon Islands.

Vietnam

In addition to our experience working in Vietnam at the ASEAN regional level, IES Advisory has carried out over 20 projects in the past five-years alone, covering an extensive range of topics from renewable energy integration modelling and roadmaps to Vietnam Wholesale Electricity Market simulations and policy reform. Our team has recently conducted detailed power system reliability analysis on the impacts of near-term power shortages in Vietnam, then advised on priority investments for improving reliability. We also recently carried out full energy-sector transition modelling for Vietnam, which included the power, transport, industrial, and residential sectors to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050.

Philippines

Our IES team has carried out numerous studies for the power system in the Philippines that range from decarbonization / net-zero modelling to conducting audits on the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market. We have also modelled a range of decarbonization scenarios against the ‘Reference Scenario’ from the latest Philippines Energy Plan. The IES team has also led a number of audits for the electricity market operator on changes to the WESM’s market system to support the introduction of a reserves market. We also regularly carry out WESM audits for a range of other organizations, including generation companies with Market Participant Interfaces accessing the WESM Market Management System. IES has also worked closely with the market commission on testing and systems certification for new components that are being implemented to the WESM. Our consultants have significant experience working in the Philippines WESM and have intimate knowledge on its processes.

Cambodia

IES Advisory has an extensive portfolio of recent work in Cambodia’s power system. Most notably, IES led technical assistance to support the formulation of the National Power Development Plan, which involved demand forecasting, generation, and transmission network planning, in addition to numerous other tasks involved in producing the new PDP for the Country. During this time, IES has led numerous renewable energy and grid integration studies in Cambodia, including a comprehensive assessment of Solar PV and Wind resources, economic and technical feasibility studies, policy and regulatory support on behind-the-meter rooftop PV legislative design, and BESS deployment roadmaps, amongst many others. Our team has established strong working partnerships with counterparts in Cambodian departments operating in the electricity sector.

Laos

The IES team has worked on many recent assignments in Laos, which range from grid-impact and power system optimization studies to regulatory reforms and pre-feasibility assessments. Over the past two years, IES consultants carried out a detailed Solar PV integration and roadmap study, which worked closely with government counterparts to identify the most suitable locations for development and conducted a grid-impact integration study to evaluate the levels of Solar PV that can be safely deployed. During this time, our team has also provided technical advice to the utility on a set of enhancements to the legal and regulatory framework for the power sector.

Indonesia

IES Advisory has been supporting the Indonesian government with the formulation of long and medium-term development plans and priority investments for the energy sector. IES consultants prepared a detailed white paper on key net-zero policy / strategy considerations that includes key topics such as the early decommissioning of existing coal plants, renewable energy scale-up opportunities, de-risking investments in renewable energy, and the encouragement of private sector engagement. IES has also carried out decarbonization modelling for Indonesia’s power sector.

Singapore
